September 2018

Please read bulletins carefully so you will be informed about our school programs.

AWARDS ASSEMBLY –Our first Awards assembly will be on Friday, September 7, 2018.  Kindergarten and 1stgrade will be at 8:35 am, 2nd and 3rd grade will be at 9:15 am, 4th and 5th grade will be at 10:30 am.  ALL Awards assembly will be on the first Friday of the month.

NO SCHOOL – Parents, remember there is no school on Monday, September 10, and Wednesday, September 19, 2018.

ENGLISH LEARNER ADVISORY COUNCIL – We have to form a council for this year.  There will be an orientation and election meeting on Wednesday, September 13, 2017 at 1:30 pm in the auditorium.  ALL parents are invited and can participate in the council.

PICTURE DAY – Thursday, September 13, 2018.

EMERGENCY INFORMATION - Emergency information must be on file with the school.  Emergency cards have been sent home.  Parents should keep this information up to date by informing the school of changes immediately.  Children will only be released to those people who are listed on the emergency card and identification will be required.

PUPIL ATTENDANCE AND ABSENCE - California State Law requires every child of school age to attend school unless ill.  When returning from an absence, the child must present a written note from his/her parent stating the cause of the absence.  The note must also include the child’s name and dates of the absences.  Students arriving after 8:30 a.m. have to be signed in by an adult in the main office, and a written excuse has to be submitted.

RELEASE OF CHILDREN DURING SCHOOL HOURS - For the protection of your child, children cannot be released by teachers during school hours without the approval of the principal.  If it is necessary for your child to be excused, it is essential that you call for him/her by 2:00 pm, come into the school office, and provide photo identification.  Children cannot be released during school hours on the basis of a telephone call or note.  Children may only be released to the parent or person listed on the Emergency Information Card.  No child may be released to any person under the age of 18 or to someone without proper identification.

CLASS ORGANIZATION – Due to the many changes in our enrollment during the first few weeks of the school year, present room assignments are only tentative.  Some children may be changing rooms in the next few days or weeks to provide a more suitable learning experience.

EMERGENCY DISPERSAL PLAN - If any serious emergencies arise, all children will be kept at school until released by their teacher to a parent or designated adult as shown on the Emergency Card.  The reunion gate is the one that is at the back of the school facing Jayseel Street.  In our plan, should the emergency continue, children would eventually be moved to Verdugo Hills High School, which will serve as an extended emergency site.

PARENT VISITS TO SCHOOL - Parents are welcome and encouraged to visit the classroom, meet the child's teacher and become acquainted with the school program once their child has become adjusted to his/her new class.  It is hoped that parents will visit the school frequently and that close contact is maintained between parents and teachers.  Visitors are required to come to the office for a visitor's permit.  Please limit your visits to 20 minutes.  Teachers cannot leave their class nor can they hold a conference while class is in session.

RAINY DAYS (INCLEMENT WEATHER DAYS) – On rainy days, after school programs will be indoors.  The lower playground gate will remain locked, and you can meet your child at the front gate.

PARENT VOLUNTEERS - If you would like to assist our teachers, provide help with our English learners, or participate in our field trips, you must be a registered volunteer. You can pick-up an application from the office.  DEADLINE IS FRIDAY, OCTOBER 12, 2018 for the school year 2018-2019. No volunteers will be processed after this date unless the student is new to the school.

Please see that all of your child's belongings, including coats, lunch pails, paper lunch bags, raincoats, sweaters, and other items are labeled with your child's full name and room number.  If this is done, the lost and found can do a much better job of returning lost articles.

SAFETY - We ask parents to review safety measures with children who walk to school.  If you drive your child to school, designate a location where you let your child out and pick him up each day.  The parking lot and drive way is off-limits for this purpose.  Please obey the traffic signs.  DO NOT Park in the bus zone it is against the law and you may be cited by parking enforcement.  Do not park in the handicap stall without a handicap plaque, and do not park or block the blue paint areas.  Remember that double parking is unsafe and illegal.  Teachers and school personnel consistently instruct children to cross at the crosswalks only.  That extra minute could prevent a serious or fatal accident.

School Police - (213) 625- 6631.  Please use this number to report vandalism, burglary, and other acts of suspicious nature during non-school hours.

Woodcraft Rangers - Woodcraft Rangers is a nonprofit organization which receives financial support from federal and state funds, grants, and individual donations, to provide an after-school program and activities.  Students must conduct themselves in a manner that is consistent with the rules and regulations of our school.  This program serves Transitional Kindergarten through fifth grade.  There are limited spaces available in all grade levels and students may be put on a wait list. If you are interested in this program, contact Ms. Ana during her office hours, between 12 and 6 pm.
